The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The Four Way Test
Of the things we think say, or do
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3) Will it bring GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

President's Message
I want to thank last week's guest speaker, President and CEO of Coco & Company, Tim Coco. Tim gave a presentation on "Yesterday's Transistor Radios" which have developed into smart phones of today. He actually brought in a transistor radio from the 1990's which was triple the size that I remembered them to be. Ah, the joys of my selective memories.
Tim also discussed the history of Haverhill's local radio station, WHAV. The earliest use of WHAV was in July, 1922 in Delaware. It was one of the first 100 broadcast radio stations licensed by the US. The Haverhill Gazette conceived of a local radio station in 1944, but had to wait until the end of World War II to develop WHAV. In 1947, John "Jack" Russ, "WHAV founder, stated WHAV is going to be your station - a station for the people of Haverhill and the people in our surrounding towns." WHAV was the start for many radio personalities including Edwin Johnson, Gary LaPierre , Earl "Mr. Midnight" Gynan and our own Tim Coco. In addition, Tom Bergeron got his start on WHAV in the mid-1970s and went on to host Hollywood Squares, Americašs Funniest Home Videos, and Dancing with the Stars.
During the 1980's and 1990's, the radio call letters were sold numerous times and in 1998 the Haverhill Gazette re-purchased ownership of WHAV. In 2005, WHAV aired Spanish Language programs as "Radio Impacto". Tim was very proud to announce that Coco & Co assumed the rights to WHAV and the station returned to English programming as an Internet radio station in 2004. WHAV is now operated by Public Media of New England, a not-for-profit organization and is heard on AM radio, Internet, cell phones and public access televisions stations.
I tried, but didn't get one joke out again this week. Mike Botte and his table very generously sprung the money to stop me in my tracks. I am so impressed by the dedication shown by Rotarians to save others from the pain of my joke telling skills. Way to go!!
Please remember to keep Bill Adams in your prayers and thoughts while he is recuperating from surgery. Hopefully, with all the goodwill sent his way, he'll be back with us shortly.
Do you have your Rotary Badge? If not, please see Bonnie Michaleas or Greg DiBurro to order a new one!
Do you have your Rotary Pin? If not, please see Bonnie to receive a new pin as we may be following Cindy Ryan's guideline of fining those who are not wearing their Rotary pin.
Happy Birthday shout out to: Jefferson Davis, King Davis, Ira Korinow and Ken Smith - all celebrated in the month of February!!
Does anyone have sports tickets or know of a possible donor of sports tickets? If so, please contact Julian Rich, Co"chair of the Sports Raffle Committee.
I was thrilled to welcome back Darlene Beal from her Rotaplast mission in Lima, Peru. I hope that she'll do a presentation of her trip in the very near future. I also thought you'd be interested in Darlene's latest blog posting: "A Mission from Start to Finish"

Every Child Has a Story
"Every child has a story. Most have come from the highlands of Peru or the sierra, days away by bus. On the front cover of every story reveals a tender little face, marred by an abnormality that would, if not corrected dictate the rest of his/her life."

Darlene has made a difference by her mission; I hope we can too by supporting the remarkable work done. I've been informed that Rotary Internal General Secretary, John Hewko, has spelled out five priorities for strengthening the organization in the year to come:
1. Eradicating polio
2. Future Vision
3. Rotary Club Central - online resource for Rotary Clubs
4. Membership - making Rotary more appealing & relevant to younger members
5. Humanitarian Assistance
With those thoughts in mind, please support the Rotary Foundation during 2011-2012. I know that we CAN make the difference.
